Rubedo is the youngest son of the Kreideprinz and chief alchemist of the Knights of Favonius, Albedo. Rubedo lives with Albedo as well as the rest of his siblings on Dragonspine, in a cottage Albedo had built close to the lab.
Rubedo is less than a year old, still just a babe. He is often dressed in warm furs and thick coats. Still being a youngin, he doesn't have a particular favorite food yet, though he will gladly eat the sunshine sprats his father makes if they’re mushed up for him a bit first. He has soft blond hair and ice blue eyes like his father, and is essentially the spitting image of Albedo, even as an infant.
Rubedo is also a tad strange in that regard. Rubedo is a hybrid child, born of both a homunculus and a sun serpent. While homunculi are created and not born, a sun serpent is and when a sun serpent IS born, they are typically born with some form of markings as well as a pair of “horns” (He initially assumed they were just horns, but Xochitl later informed him they were in fact, technically a part of a sun serpent’s eyes???) Anyway, while Albedo’s other children were all born with at least some of these features (Solaris and Soren had both, Astor had only horns, etc) Rubedo was born with none of these features. Instead, he seemed to be a nearly identical copy of Albedo. This confused even Xochitl, who said none of their other offspring had this happen. At first Albedo theorized he would simply gain these features later in life (Aphelion was born with no markings, but later gained a few as he grew older.) but Ruby’s 1st birthday is approaching, and there is still no sign of horns or markings typical for sun serpents. Still, even if Rubedo gains no markings, there’s no harm done and it won’t affect him negatively at all.
Ruby (as he’s been nicknamed by his siblings) is a very clingy child, and often wants to always be near Albedo at all times which is a problem for the alchemist and his studies. Whenever he leaves Ruby's line of sight, the poor thing immediately starts to sob. Albedo has tried leaving him with Sucrose, Timaeus, and even Kaeya on one occasion, but has had no luck in finding a good babysitter.
Solaris, as his oldest brother, is quite fond of Rubedo, and is one of the only people he can be left with while his father is performing his experiments. Though Albedo has to be careful because sometimes Solaris is also running experiments of his own. And unlike himself, Solaris has no concept of “safety” when running his wind soarer tests.
Astor is also fond of Rubedo and is a bit more responsible than Solaris, often carrying him on his back with a blanket wrap to keep him warm.
